The Peter Smaal Foundation is founded the third of July 2015 in Gorinchem and manages a foundation that originated from Stigterstaal B.V.. From 1995 until his passing away in 2010 Peter Smaal was the director of this family business which is a supplier of steel for shipbuilders, repair yards and offshore fabricators.
Peter Smaal worked for Stigterstaal for five years when he and his brother Lex took over from their father. For many years, Peter enjoyed working at Stigterstaal and made an essential contribution to the company’s development until his health no longer allowed it. Even when he was ill, he remained fully committed to Stigterstaal. Peter had a passion for steel and was particularly interested in new developments in the steel industry. He was also interested in culture and was a socially committed person. The Peter Smaal Foundation aims to continue and stimulate this passion and his interests.
The past years the focus of the Peter Smaal Foundation has been on steel-related research. From 2022 onwards we would like to support projects which are in line with the broader interests of the Foundation’s name giver. Therefore the articles of association and policy plan have been altered to in line with this new goal.
